Why Outlook Recall Fails

The standard Outlook "Recall Message" button is essentially useless for company-wide recalls. It fails if emails are read, users are on mobile, or there are sync delays.

The Admin-Level Solution

The only reliable method: Content Search and Purge from Microsoft 365 Compliance Center. This bypasses client limitations and deletes directly from the server.

Result: Email removed from all 200+ inboxes in under 10 minutes. Moved to Admin-Recoverable Items—invisible to users but recoverable if needed. Crisis resolved.

The User Who Couldn't Email: Hybrid Exchange Fix

High-priority ticket: A user could email internally without issues, but every external email failed with "Recipient address rejected: NO-DOMAIN" errors. Not just one domain—all external domains.

Root Cause: Broken Source of Truth

The mailbox was using its internal address as primary. The proxyAddresses attribute in on-premises Active Directory was completely blank. In hybrid setups, on-prem AD is the authoritative source—when that attribute is blank, Azure AD Connect syncs "nothing" to the cloud.

The Fix: Repair the Source

We manually populated the proxyAddresses attribute in on-premises AD with the correct routing information, then forced an Azure AD Connect delta sync.

Start-ADSyncSyncCycle -PolicyType Delta

Result: User's primary SMTP address corrected to public domain. All external email flow restored within 5 minutes.
